FAREWELL ♥

THANK YOU DEAR RESTLESS
It's with heavy hearts that we announce that Nightfell is to be shut down shortly.

RL circumstances have unfortunately barged in uninvited. After much deliberation, we sadly came to realize that creating content and modding the game with the steady dedication it deserves wouldn't be viable anymore; the plot is about to thicken, the pace is about to quicken, and as much as we'd love to keep it alive, it's no longer a possibility. We apologize for being on the quieter side this month, as well as for this sudden announcement. It's the last thing we wanted to publish, especially so close to the end of the year.

Thank you for your creativity, your kind words, your silly shenanigans. Thank you for making Nightfell so much more than what we initially envisioned. We've had a blast with so many of you! Thank you for indulging and playing with us, we hope that your short time in Nightfell was everything you hoped it would be!

As a parting gift, we've created another community for you to use, [community profile] afternight. We've already posted the events for January and February (as well as an exploration log), if you'd like some sort of closure (or some questions answered!). Feel free to use it as a Nightfell-flavored sandbox, open for all!

We wish you a very Happy New Year, all the love and all the fun. Thank you for everything! We'll see you around ♥

PLOTTING POST | EVENT #3
Welcome to Nightfell's third plotting post! You'll find the whole thing in its entirety just below, rather than a summary, which we figure will help you decide exactly how you'd like your character to react to certain things, etc. This is not the event log! The actual log will go up on the 7th.
Please use the form below in order to plot for the event! If you're a new player, you can comment here !

LOG EVENT #3

I. COLD HANDS, WARM HEART
From December through January, high winds gradually rise all across the Netherworld, large flakes of snow causing white-out condition. The wind howls and whistles, blades of icy gusts cutting through your clothes as frost clings to your hair and lashes. No matter where you are, you feel its glacial, bone-chilling force, and no matter what you do, you quickly find that nothing keeps you warm. You're freezing, shivering, teeth chattering. Fire and the proximity of others may offer brief reprieves, so bundle up and find a cuddling partner before you crystalize. If you don't have a Soulmate, now might be the time to search for one.

Unfortunately, when it rains, it pours. Some of you may experience sudden, intense headaches, followed by a sense of panic. Your chest tightens. Your head swims. Your lungs ice over, and you know then: someone's messing with your home in the Shadowlands.

► If you're already in your home, stay alert as light goes out: squint through the dark, and you'll soon be able to distinguish an enormous figure. Krampus.
► If you're anywhere in Stygia and are unable to teleport, crossing the Tempest is particularly perilous on your own, though if you explain what's going on to a Ferryman, they'll oblige.
► Luckily, Krampus doesn't seem extremely interested in your Tethers, but it's entirely possible that he damages a few while being in your home. He's mostly interested in you, and whether you've been a good Restless.

If you feel like your character's done a decent job at silencing their Shadow, Krampus will curse them; every full moons through December and January, they'll be compelled to tell a significant lie. A single lie can be told multiple times to different and/or the same people, and multiple lies can also be told multiple times to different and/or the same people. If, on the other hand, you feel as though they've been struggling -- or worse, enjoying its presence -- Krampus will give them a unique coin: everywhere you go, it'll loudly comment on anyone within 10 feet, giving a brief but accurate description of what your character truly thinks of them. You can't get rid of it, but after its first use, it'll disintegrate within a couple of weeks.

II. DON'T LEAF ME HANGIN'
Kiss kiss fall in love, it's mistletoe time! And its provenance is a little gruesome: some Restless have been coughing them up due to the floral disease affecting Stygia's citizens, and for reasons unknown, the plant's made itself a home in tree branches, bushes, and ceilings. Having the time of its life, probably! Some sprites have taken a liking to them, and started worshipping them as flowery entities. It's believed among them that kissing underneath the mistletoe is the greatest way to honor said entities, while refusing to is a terrible affront; the sprites will start following you and pranking you in retaliation.

► If you walk under mistletoe along with someone else and refuse to/do not kiss, you'll be followed by a sprite for 24 hours, during which they'll prank (see list below*) and just generally annoy you. Only one sprite at a time will follow you, even if you walk again under mistletoe within the 24 hours time frame.
► If you walk alone under mistletoe, this unnamed creature will stalk you from the shadows, whispering and trying to coax you closer, promising delightful kisses you'll never forget. In truth, it just wants to devour your tongue, a delicacy. It'll give up after 12 hours, and will never follow you inside your home.
► An old woman sells mistletoe berry tarts in the Marketplace, and claims it'll help anyone who suffers from insomnia. She's not wrong! One bite and you'll fall dead asleep within the hour, and only a kiss will be able to awaken you. Sweet dreams, sleeping beauty!
If you do wind up kissing anyone under the mistletoe, you'll find it easier to deal with your Shadow through the month, a blessing from the sprites! If, on the other hand, you don't partake in kissing endeavors, your Shadow will seem louder than usual.

Additionally, many patrons in Mirth host festive soirées throughout December. If you feel like dancing, singing, drinking eggnog and eating delicious hors d'oeuvres, wear your ugliest festive sweater and have some fun! Just be careful, as mistletoe will 100% find its way inside these venues!

PRANK LIST
*you can either RNG or choose! all effects disappear within 24 hours. can be pranked multiple times within 24 hours.

► the sprite enchants your clothing to make them colder and colder.
► the sprite swaps your character's voice with someone else's.
► the sprite steals an object that belongs to you and puts it in another character's pocket/room.
► your breathing becomes loud and obnoxious.
► when it snows, you perceive every flake as a human face.
► everything you eat tastes like ashes.
► you feel compelled to scream everything you say.
► you think you are the world's greatest bard, so sing your heart out!
► you gain a forked tongue.
► when breathing out in cold weather, you exhale black smoke instead of white breath.
► anomalous orifices begin appearing on your body, such as mouths, eye sockets, etc.
► you can now hear all heartbeats within 10 feet of you.
► you hallucinate a worm in your chest trying to eat its way out. you can’t feel it, but the skin on your torso ripples as it burrows beneath.
► you feel like your body is slowly melting, like a candle with a too hot flame. it's not.
► your ears constantly hear a repeating brief tune.

ooc note

► As always, check out the Notice Board if you'd like additional prompts! Older quests from previous months are always available as well. You'll also find the Calendar right here.
► If you have questions, please redirect them here.

LOG EVENT #2

I. PUSHING UP DAISIES
cw: depiction of hanahaki, mention of blood, mild body horror

The Frightful Harvest ended on a bloody, eerie note, but the Respite's most welcome interlude has proven exceptionally fruitful. The sky's darkened again, moons struggling to glow through turbulent clouds, but crops all over Stygia have grown dense and healthy, herbs and plants and flowers aplenty. Normally, it'd be a time to rejoice, even as sleet pours and winds grow bitterly cold -- and it might have been, had greens and stems and petals NOT elected to blossom inside you. Your lungs, specifically.

It's an uncommon side effect of the Harvest, affecting those who foster affection or attraction towards another, triggered only by a stray thought. Almost as if punished by Oblivium for harboring any kind of positive feelings. The worst part is that the object of your desire doesn't even have to be in the Netherworld for you to be afflicted. Over the span of three months, you'll gradually experience various degrees of the "harvest's curse", depending on the source of your feelings:

► PHYSICAL/EMOTIONAL ATTRACTION & REQUITED LOVE
It starts with an itch. Your throat tickles, an odd sensation in your lungs, slightly constricted. Allergies? Not quite. It worsens overtime, and days pass by, perhaps weeks. You cough, a little more every day, a little deeper, and then it happens: petals, stuck to your lips as you wheeze and try to empty your chest. Marigold, carnations, daisies, peonies... Thankfully, for you, it's more of an annoyance, sporadic at best and leaving you exhausted at times, but you're in no immediate danger. Unfortunately, not all Restless share the same luck.

► UNREQUITED LOVE
It doesn't matter whether it is truly unrequited; as long as you think it is, whether you're fully convinced or distantly resigned, you get the whole package. It starts the same way the lesser variation does, gradual, and with unsavory (!) additions: lilies and dark red roses. The first slowly spreads its poison in your body, inducing fevers, skin rashes, blistering in your mouth and stomach aches. The second pricks your throat bloody, making speech difficult and breathing even more so. It spreads throughout Stygia, and if most wound up meeting their end in the past, some speak of a highly hypothetical cure. It's believed that if the object of your affection confesses equally strong feelings for you, the curse should rapidly subside. If this option isn't viable, Doran promises that all Healers in Hale are working extremely hard to find a solution. In the meantime, symptoms can be partially soothed with poultices and spells that you can find in the Marketplace or in Serene. Some merchants might even take pity on you and offer them for free.
if your character has heard of similar diseases in their home world, they're absolutely welcome to share their insight on the netherwork or anywhere else
the evolution of the disease can be as gradual, as fast or as severe as you wish it to be
a mini quest to retrieve ingredients for a cure will be available in december or january
by february, all characters should be cured

II. DO NOT PASS GO
cw: mention of blood, torture, branding, violence, forced captivity

Full-swing investigations concerning the Harvest's murders have begun, though the mysterious rider has yet to resurface. The day is young still, but no matter; the Hierarchy firmly believes that the creature was summoned by a group of renegades, fully intent on finding and dismembering the organization. Perhaps even literally.

If you've spilled blood not your own in the previous event, the Hierarchy finds you. Do they know? It doesn't really matter; they've targeted you for reasons they won't divulge, persuaded of your involvement -- and off to the Gallows you go. Each of you receives the same greeting when you arrive, held down by rough hands and branded upon the arm with the letter F. The mark signifies ‘forsaken’, and the painful scar is indelible proof that each of you has betrayed the Hierarchy's hospitality. Writhe and scream and glower as much as you want; next thing you know, something heavy hits you across the head, and you collapse.

When your vision slowly creeps back, your eyes adjust to a dimly lit stone cell. Your feet are secured by iron cuffs tethered by one long chain, and you lie in nothing but filthy, tattered rags. It's dark; the air is bloated and filled with agonizing shrieks. Dead vines scrap the walls of half-crumbled buildings, weather-worn stone pillars surrounded by withered clumps of grass. You may converse with your cellmates: the guards patrolling the Gallows couldn't care less, convinced that no one could possibly escape anyway.

► Ironically, a magical barrier around the Gallows prevents magical/spiritual abilities from functioning. However, characters who roam free still can absolutely sneak in! Be careful not to get caught, though!
► Loud disagreements might attract unwanted attention. A single guard will come, and if he finds nothing else amiss, will threaten them to be quiet. A second violation earns the offender a rap on their bare feet with a club. A third violation will cause the offender to be gagged. Note that in order to beat or gag the offender, the guard must first open the cell.
If you share affinities with Gargoyles, incapacitating a guard in any way will draw the attention of one. It'll show you to the gates where you'll be able to escape, taking care of sentries on your way. You should probably keep a low-profile from then on, and avoid showing-off your brand.
► As you attempt to escape, you might come across a terrifying spectacle: in front of you, impaled through the shoulder by a spear, a weary humanoid figure covered in blood. The body is being restrained by additional shackles on each arm and leg, which are linked to chains anchored within the walls. There's a guard nearby, armed to the teeth: do you stop to help and free the prisoner, or do you keep running? Vote HERE.
► A secret passage may be found through a mausoleum nearby; an arrow of flaking red paint marks the entrance. Or is it blood? Inside, it's nearly pitch-black. Perhaps, if you're lucky, your vision extends as far as 30 feet in front of you, but occasionally, the darkness is broken by clinging phosphorescent fungi or crawling luminescent creatures, and from out of the silence echo sounds of dripping water. You're underground, and Abysmals can be encountered here if you're too loud. You should also watch out for cave-ins, but as you get farther away from the general region of the Gallows, your magical abilities gradually come back.
► Eventually, a long, broken staircase will lead you to Hale. If you're injured, you'll be sent to the main infirmary; characters with healing abilities or knowledge are super welcome to help!

Luckily for you, there are so many prisoners it's a difficult task for the Hierarchy to always keep track of all of them. Your brand, however, is a dead giveaway, so you might as well try and find a way to get rid of it; you might hear through the grapevines that the dead skin of Badaliscus can be used as bandages, and overtime, the brand will fully heal and disappear.
the puck's blood, a friend's or an enemy's all count as "spilled blood not your own", whether it was played out or handwaved
even if your character chose otherwise, you're absolutely free to become a prisoner if you wish. it's clear the hierarchy makes mistakes anyway! in the same vein, participation is NOT mandatory, whether as a prisoner or a helper
you may vote OOCly based on what you think your character would choose in that specific moment. future outcomes are 100% influenced by your choices, whenever we ask you to vote.
the voting period will end a little before the log goes up! if you unanimously decide to leave the prisoner to their doom, those who attempt to save him will find themselves unable to defeat the guard. if, on the other hand, you unanimously decide to save the prisoner, we'll let you know how it unfolds when the log goes up! for fun's sake and similarly to the puck adventure, you may play it out in different groups or on your own, and still obtain the same results as everyone else whether your characters threaded together!

ooc note

► As always, check out the Notice Board if you'd like additional prompts! Older quests from previous months are always available as well. You'll also find the Calendar right here.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good day, dear Restless! As always, we aim to adjust and improve Nightfell whenever possible, which is why we'd like to run a poll by you regarding the future of the game's AC. Now that our first round is over, we realize just how intangible and confusing the requirements may seem to be, and it's a fine line to walk for everyone. To remedy this, we've decided to ask you what you think and what kind of system you'd prefer for the next rounds.

Because Plurk is limited as far as options and characters go, we'll detail the answers here. Feel free to vote on Plurk, reply to this post, or both!

A.

► We keep the same system, but clarify the guidelines:

  • A brief summary of what your character has been up to that doesn't rely mostly on handwaved actions, links optional
  • As we keep an eye out whether threads are provided, we should be able to find evidence of 1. an effort to branch out (ie. tagging a few people and/or avoid exclusively tagging inboxes/castmates), 2. involvement that amounts to more than a few days of active play within the month, and 3. tags that aren't mostly comprised of one-liners
  • Ongoing threads are fine, but tagging them once or twice every month, for instance, hardly displays a desire to be engaged with the setting/other players
  • We don't expect anyone to be all over the place all the time. Check-in games are easier to squat, and it's one of the reasons why it's important to us to ensure that players do have the time and desire to participate, especially because AC is relatively easy. These guidelines are implemented in an effort to counter potential squatting and to be fair to current players as well as future applicants
  • Notify us before the last week of a month if extenuating circumstances prevent you from playing

  • B.

► A mininum of 2 or 3 threads, a brief summary of what your character's been up to, no comment count required. A couple lines are enough, just to give us an idea of potential consequences your character might face.

    C.

► 8+ comments across 2-3 threads + a brief summary. A couple lines are enough, just to give us an idea of potential consequences your character might face.

    D.

► 16+ comments across 2-4 threads + a brief summary. A couple lines are enough, just to give us an idea of potential consequences your character might face.

    E.

    ► OTHER (please specify!)

We'll consider your input and feedback and do our best to find a decent compromise for everyone based on your insight! We've been having a blast with you guys and we're really just trying to make sure that everyone's on the same wavelengths. Thank you for your time!

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello Restless! We know you’re dying for an update on the poll we took last week. We’d like to thank those who provided feedback; we are trying our best to make this game accommodating, as well as fun, for you all, so giving us insights into your own experiences and expectations helps make this possible. So thank you!

    APPLICATIONS & GAME CAP

► The plurk poll of moving to an application queue yielded results of Yes at 54%, with Yes, but after next round came in at 37%. We’ve decided that going with Yes, but after next round would, essentially, please both these groups.
► This means, starting at the beginning of December, applications will be processed through the queue system and reserves will be closed indefinitely. Starting right after this round, applications can be submitted at any time throughout November, though they will not be processed until after December 2nd 11:59 PM EST. We'll most likely stick to this method for the following months unless adjustments are needed! Accepted applicants will be notified and given 48 hours to reply should they still be interested in joining.
► Concerning this round ( reserves opening October 26th 12:00 AM EST and applications opening October 28th 12:00 AM EST ), the procedure will operate as it did the first time, with reserves being open to all without a cap. We are, however, expanding the window of opportunity to submit applications due to pending AC results, so applications will close November 2nd 11:59 PM EST.
► As of now, two characters have been dropped, so we are at 68 characters ( not counting characters played by mods ). We have decided to expand the cap by 5, bringing the cap up to 75. A little bit of math and we’re at 7 open spots for this upcoming application round.

    CALENDAR

► As stated in the mid-month post, the calendar is up for tweaking. It should be updated by the end of this weekend to have a more concrete schedule for November ( and tentative outlines for December and January ). As a heads up, we are likely to shift everything back a day or two, seeing as we are expanding the processing of applications ( ie, plotting post on the 5th or 6th, event on the 7th or 8th ). Again, the calendar will be adjusted this weekend as we finalize!

    TDM

► Considering the fact that the game is near cap ( and may very well continue to fluctuate minimally from month to month ), we have decided to not create new TDM prompts every month. The TDM will read mostly the same; however, there will be some slight variations with the Notice Board listings. We will post a fresh TDM entry every month, which will, hopefully, make it easier for everyone to see/follow/comment on. The next one will go up tomorrow, and will coincide with new quests on the Notice Board! Please note that if you ever wish to revisit older quests, you'll find them in the comments below.

    SOULIDARITY

► It hasn’t quite hit CAPTCHA yet, but it is close enough that we have decided to start the new, permanent entry, which can be found HERE. The process is similar to last time; however, please do not respond to top-levels directly. Each top-level/code will now include a link to a Soulidarity-specific entry in each character’s journal (which you must create if you wish to participate). For organizational purposes (and to avoid another CAPTCHA), please tag each other in your respective journals!

    FEEDBACK

► As always, please know that you can contact us at any time via the Mod Contact or FAQ. You all have been keeping us busy, but we certainly enjoy the ideas you have been coming up with as you immerse yourselves in the lore and setting.

    MID-MONTH MOD POST

Look alive, dear Restless or try to! Your tiny mod team is here with a few reminders, questions, and announcements. Nothing dire, don't worry! You're an amazing bunch and this game is basically sailing itself.

    ACTIVITY CHECK | CALENDAR

► Just a brief reminder that you can check-in and submit threads at any time during the month. Just make sure to post before OR on the last day of the month to avoid being swept from the game.
► For the next few months, please note that nothing on the calendar will be set in stone as we adjust to the flow of the game as well as the player base. Mind you though, changes shouldn't be drastic (if there's any!), so you can still absolutely use it to get a general idea of what will be occurring and when. The influence of the Moons, on the other hand, is 100% immutable!

    GAME CAP & APPLICATIONS

► As you probably already know, we've reached game cap right off the bat. Drops are inevitable, though we are still considering upping the current cap to 75 for the next round, or perhaps December's.
► In the same vein, we're thinking of implementing a rolling queue system, which would mean that 1. reserves would be closed indefinitely, 2. applications could be submitted at any time, and 3. applications would be processed as space opens up. We'll probably run a poll on plurk, but you're welcome to comment on this post to let us know what you think!
► New TDMs will only be posted if there's at least 10 available slots.

    NPC & SOULIDARITY

► Lüna's fallen in love with Assana. WHICH MEANS. She might become a full-fledged OC in the near future with whom you could have CR if you want! What it DOESN'T mean is that CR with her equates favors. It doesn't. CR =/= privileges. Assana obviously has knowledge that PCs do not possess, but we'll always ensure that all characters have access to the same opportunities. It can be a thin line to cross, and if we do end up messing up somehow, please be sure that we'll always work with you to rectify any mistake! It might not come to pass at all, but we wanted to be transparent in advance, just in case!
► As for the Soulidarity app, wow. We didn't expect it to blow up the way it did! As soon as it hits CAPTCHA, we'll post another permanent entry and adjust the mechanics. The idea is that everyone can repost their top-level on said new entry, and attach a link at the bottom, which would lead to a separate post in each character’s journal ( basically a character inbox entry, just Soulidarity specific ).

    FEEDBACK

► Please know that you can reach out anytime for suggestions, questions, general feedback and sacrifices. We hope you're enjoying this first event and we're super excited to have you!

    PLOTTING POST | EVENT #1
You wonderful people you!! This is the plotting post for the very first event in Nightfell. You'll find the whole thing in its entirety just below, rather than a summary, which we figure will help you decide exactly how you'd like your character to react to certain things, etc. This is not the event log! The actual log will go up on the 6th.
Please use the form below in order to plot for the event!

    INTRO
It isn't rare for the seasons in the Netherworld to be a little erratic, though many days have passed now without much of a hint of its typical mercuriality, a good and a bad omen all at once. This respite is commonly referred to as the proverbial "calm before the storm", but it also marks the beginning of merrier celebrations. The Moons above are gilded silver, the twilight sky edged with faint pink and orange -- a sunrise phantasm, spilling over the horizon. It's an infrequent spectacle, accompanied by a dulcet breeze and light drizzles that seem to encourage growth nearly everywhere. Unfortunately, under its influence, people seem a little on edge, quick to anger, but no matter; around Stygia, Restless have begun hanging decorations and ornaments on trees and windowsills, left to catch the moonlight and give off marigold and ginger glows, warmly lighting up the city. Rather than fish, the smell of freshly ground spices permeates the air in the Harbors, Mirth keeps its doors opened to all, but just before the festivities officially begin, a cacophony of chimes resounds all over, a transmission difficult to ignore.

On the screen of your cellphone, nothing; only a voice, ragged, out of breath...

“The woods... Oakwoods! They've come alive! O-One minute he was complaining about the water seeping into his boots, and the next he was... he was being yanked up into the trees! We didn’t see what happened to him, but we heard... the screams, ohh, the screams. Please! Come to Serene, I beg you. This is our safest sanctuary, and the lan... oh, no... wait, no, please... please... NOOO--”

...and the feed abruptly ends, a dull chirr of static. Will you ignore the stranger's call for help and feast, or venture into the woods?

    ► I. KNOCK ON WOOD
When you cross the gates of Serene, an old woman welcomes you, palm flat against her chest and disquiet in her eyes. Myrtille, her name. Oakwoods loom dense and dark in the distance behind her, groaning low as leaves rustle without wind. The Mourning Lantern was stolen, and malevolence rose in turn, dooming them all.

“It was once kept here, a sacred Artifact crafted from the bones of Serene's first founder, who gave her heart’s blood willingly to the woods in an act of contrition. It's the absence of the lantern that is contributing to the wood’s unusually active malice, and if you lot cannot retrieve it, then we must sacrifice another. Go! Take these torches and go, before Oakwoods swallow us whole.”

So you've decided to be brave. Commendable, or foolish? The wood is dark and shrouded in mist, and the trees crowd around you, an absent wind somehow whispering foul nothings in your ear as dead leaves rustle around your feet. Your Shadow basks in the murmurs, sensing the malign presence in Oakwoods as a faint, garbled scream echoes in the distance. You wander deeper and the canopy thickens, thin streaks of moonlight peppering the woods in deep patches of darkness. Behind you, a creature you can't see hisses, and a fluttering of wings nearby alerts you to the arrival of snickering harpies lurking on branches. “Dead,” they croak, in a sing-song chorus. “Dead as daylight.” Oddly enough, they seem content to just watch and stalk you, perhaps expecting you to die quickly, an easy and effortless meal.

It's a frustrating errand if you've ever known one. You barely know what you're looking for, and your Shadow thrives in the dark, taunting, coaxing. You hear it then; a haunting melody, the silhouette of a boy on a fallen tree trunk, strumming. “Come,” he says, with a voice that shimmers like the sun on moving water. If you remember what that's like. “Rest a while. Forget your troubles.” For anyone familiar, you'll recognize him as a Puck, famous prankster, and from his hand dangles a lantern.

► If you attempt to take the lantern from him, he'll immediately drop it to the ground, causing it to break. You may choose to kill him and offer his blood to the woods, or let him go and bleed in his stead. Myrtille should be able to repair what's left of the lantern once the offering's been made.
► If you politely ask to return it, he promises that he will... if you indulge him for the night.

No matter what you choose, you will come across camps, either on your way in or on your way back: pitched tents, most moth-eaten, and some containing vestiges of prior expeditions such as putrid corpses or rotten food. You've been wandering for a while, and sleep sounds terribly inviting. Unfortunately, a wind finally picks up, and leaves begin to blow around you. A nick, then a cut, then a slash reveal the leaves to have razor sharp edges. Sleep well yet? If you've spared the Puck, he'll encourage you to sit with him around a campfire, where he'll sing and tell stories. Or are they. Perhaps you've heard of Bloody Mary before. Slenderman? The Devil that'll make you dance until you die? While the lantern remains in stranger hands, the thread between reality and fiction narrows; protagonists from the Puck's legends come to life, and the only way to rid of them is by quenching the flames of the fire.

Your journey unfortunately doesn't end there. The Puck has a riddle for you:
I am a word that is hardly there. Remove my start, and I'm an herbal flair. What am I?

If you fail to answer correctly, he'll vanish before you, and you can bid the lantern goodbye. You'll be forced to gather the bones from the corpses scattered across the woods, and feed it your blood -- or a friend's -- before you escape and return to the woman. The offering will leave you drained and exhausted, weak on your legs. If, on the other hand, you do answer correctly, the lantern is yours, and you'll be teleported out of the woods with a boon in your pocket: a piece of parchment invites you to visit your home in the Shadowlands. There, you'll find an object (or a pet) that belonged to you in your world.

the answer to the riddle is sparsely! it's up to you whether you'd like your character to fail.
legends told around the campfire can be any of the ones mentioned above or any other that might strike your fancy! go wild, have fun!
remember that if you pick an item from your character's world as their boon, it'll eventually disintegrate unless reforged with a soul.

► II. GO BIG OR GOURD HOME
Welcome to the Frightful Harvest, a festival that marks the beginning of the Respite, a temporary period of tranquility between seasons. It acknowledges the blessings offered and the role that both good and evil play in the Netherworld. It is a time to give thanks, but more importantly, it is a time of reflection and warding. Warding against not only the darkness of the next seasons to come, but of the nefarious creatures and struggles that will undoubtedly follow.

Carved pumpkins and straw bales are placed everywhere around the city, and streamers and banners are hung from every home and storefront. Decadent cakes, candies, and pastries are made in over-abundance in order to accommodate everyone, and from the lush gardens of Radiance, an elderly, dark-robed man addresses the Netherwork. You'll learn by eavesdropping on nearby Restless that his name is Doran, the oldest among you and loved by all. His smile stretches kind, and while not an official member of the Hierarchy, it's clear he has certain privileges -- well-deserved, or so you hear.

“Let us gather, feast, dance and celebrate. Let us hold our glasses high for those who heroically perished, for goodness, and for the Ascended. May their journey inspire us to change our lives and the lives of others, to resist evil, and to triumph. To you, dear friends!”

And without further ado, let the festivities begin!

    ► BARDIC BLITZ
The bardic blitz is a friendly competition that pits talented musicians against one another in an attempt to win over the affection of the crowd through festive melodies or personal compositions. Although it can be hosted just about anywhere, the bardic blitz is normally held in a large canvas tent directly in the heart of Mirth, though smaller crowds also gather in Serene and the Harbors around bonfires.

    ► FEAST
Although all cultures around Stygia bring their own tastes and specific flair to the celebrations, there are a few staple trade goods that you can find at nearly any celebration of the holiday throughout the city. Many producing the various cakes, beverages, and cookies also use the time to test and perfect their recipes, teaching others or using them as guinea pigs.
Firstdawn Tea: This revitalizing crimson tea soothes the mind and body and is brewed from the roots of the dawn flower, which only sprouts during the Respite.
Grablenuts: These fist-sized brown nuts have a hard, stippled outer shell and soft, delicious spicy centers. A single bite will slightly lower your inhibitions, and you may find yourself seeking proximity and warmth.
Elysium: A nonalcoholic beverage that smells and looks as bad as it tastes. Only those with the strongest will manage to gulp it down. Once drunk, the person experiences true bliss, which seems to last for hours; in reality, it's only a few minutes.
Will-o-the-Whiskey: Whisky with minor hallucinatory effects, visual and auditory.
Sundrop: A pound cake coated in a sugary lemon drizzle. No side-effects, just delicious!
Shadowfell Candy: Chewing on this candy will grant the character a deep and rejuvenating sleep, during which they will appear dead to anyone.
    . ► HARVEST HUNT
The harvest hunt happens in a corn maze located in Mirth's amusement park, specifically created for the occasion. Because of the labyrinthian horrors dwelling in the Tempest, some find the terror-free replica a little inappropriate, yet participants still abound every time. A favorite seasonal game of the exuberant and athletic, characters take on the role of either hunter or prey, racing through the maze to either corner their quarry or escape the hands of their pursuer. As long as Shadows behave, it's a relatively safe activity. Friendly spars sometimes occur, picnics, and star-gazing.

    ► THE PARADE
The parade is the activity most looked forward to by younger Restless. Citizens clad in colorful costumes walk the streets to the rhythm of festive music, and according to tradition, it helps ward away any lingering evil that might try to hide in the community. For reasons unknown, incidents where Restless unwillingly swap bodies sometimes occur.

    ► III. WAYWARD SUN
The Warding Ritual is a private affair, a behind-the-scene execution on the last day of the festival as you dance and feast and frolic, blissfully unaware. Something goes awry. First, a shriek in the distance, and soon, birds flying away in apparent surprise as the landscape rustles with the sounds of creatures and Restless alike fleeing. A vague sense of dread knocks the air out of your lungs, an iron grip around your throat. And you see it then, a headless figure shrouded in a black veil of cloth, sword in one hand and a bright flaming pumpkin in the other. Its head. It thunders through the night on its skeletal horse, its blade flashing in the moonlight in search of prey. Heads fall. You might get injured during the chase -- collateral damage. 10 members of the Hierarchy won't ever rise again, and the rider eventually charges into the Tempest, leaving behind bloody puddles and a slather of confusion. If you opt to help clean up the mess, you might come across stained sheets of paper on the ground, a painting of a white scorpion in the middle. Otherwise, it's time for you to go home.
